Newcastle Station’s roofline clocks restored

All three roofline clocks at the front of the North East’s busiest railway station are in sync for the first time in years, following works delivered by DSEC alongside clock makers Smith's of Derby. Using a 'Cherry picker' Mobile Elevated Working Platform, the team worked over 3 nights in October to return the 16 metre high clocks to a working order they have not been in for a number of years. Firstly, each pair of the large clock hands were removed to enable access to the broken movements, which had been damaged by water ingress over their 30-50 year lifespans. Modern, enclosed mechanisms were then bolted into place before new clock hands were installed over the clock faces. Further water-proofing measures were implemented around the existing structure to prevent any recurring water damage to the new mechanisms. In addition to this, each clock face was cleaned, before LED back lights were installed to illuminate each clock face and ensure visibility for commuters and locals around the Station.
